Have any of you guys ever had a religious friend talk to you about trying to stop masturbating? It could either be that your friend asked you if you masturbated and wants you to stop, or your friend could have told you that they masturbated and wants to stop.

I'll start first, I have a friend who i have known for a while and we had talked about masturbation and girlfriends before so we were pretty comfortable talking about anything. Anyways he starts becoming more religious and going to church more and i talked to him and he said that he was a Christian and that he was trying to change his life and that a sinful part of his life was lust. He said that girlfriends were a problem, he said that he was still a virgin but that some of his girlfriends had given him handjobs and that one gave him a blowjob. I was kinda amazed that he told me all of that.

He said that his biggest problem was masturbation. He said he would masturbate 2 or 3 times a day and that it was something he would think about often. He said that he was going to stop masturbating and stop looking at porn. I was a little surprised at this change in him but we talked for a while and i felt happy that he was trying to be a better person.

Some religions are stuck in the 50's. But most modern Christians, even Pat Robertson came out and said that it is wrong to condemn boys for masturbating: playing with a part of your body that God gave you at a time when your whole body is raging with sex hormones! It's obvious: jerking off is a totally normal, healthy and necessary part of life! If God didn't want you to play with it, he would have put it in the middle of your back!
I grew up very religious and all my church friends admitted jerking off and did not feel guilt to stop. But we didn't exactly go around telling adults....
A few of my church friends and I even jerked off together at a church youth group summer trip!

Masturbation is a selfish act and giving in to lustful acts like this are sinful. No religion in the world condones masturbation, especially by males. The loss of semen is not good for spiritual development.

Condemn might not be the right word. Yes, it's wrong for us to condemn boys for masturbating, just like it's wrong for us to condemn someone for anything. In most Christian denominations, judgment is left up to God. And yes, I believe that masturbation is a sin. Just because we have the ability to do something doesn't mean we can do it without consequence. I love eating. I enjoy it a lot, but if I just sat in my room eating all day, that wouldn't be healthy for my mind, body, or soul.

You can condemn as a sin many things that are usually (though not necessarily) related to masturbation. Lust, you can condemn as a sin. Gluttony (insatiable appetite), you can condemn as a sin. You can do thjs because they are expressly condemned as sinz in Scripture. But masturbation, you cannot condemn as a sin. And why? Because you cannot condemn as a sin something that the Bible itself never does. Or at least you cannot do so and hope to stand on any sort of solid exegetical ground.

The Bible never once mentions masturbation, and so it certainly doesn't condemn it. That ought to be significant in and of itself for a couple reasons. (1) All males do masturbate or have masturbated before. It is a universal phenomenon. As such (2), every language (even classical Hebrew and Koine Greek) has a word (or words) for masturbation. And yet, not once is it ever mentioned in Scripture. Should that not cause even the most rigid adherent to take pause before condemning as a sin any activity? If God himself saw fit to leave the topic well enough alone, where do we get off binding where he has not bound?

Even more, the thing about spilling seed and so being less holy for it. . . That is rooted in the bad theology of the Church Fathers. For one, they were fond of errantly citing the story of Onan, which has no connection to masturbation (or even contraception) whatsoever. For another, their theology was founded on faulty and incomplete understandings of human biology. They were under the impression that the whole potential for a human was contained in the male's semen, and so to ejaculate purposefully without the intent of producing a child (i.e., inside a woman's vagina, unprotected, during sex) was regarded by them as tantamount to murder. We now know that understanding of biology is absolutely wrong, as it takes both a sperm cell (from the male) and an egg cell (from the female) to have complete potential for a human.

Their theology on this matter was bad on every account, and none of it was rooted in the Bible itself (aside from the erroneous reference to Onan), and so it needs to be tossed in the trash. How it has persisted for so long and remained unchallenged in certain traditions is beyond belief. Faithfulness to God's word ought always to trump faithfulness to traditions of men.

You can only rightly condemn as a sin the things that the Bible itself condemns as a sin (and then, you had better be interpreting the passage responsibly). Considering the Bible never once even mentions masturbation even though it could have done so easily, and in spite of the fact that it was and will always remain a universal practice, demands that we conclude: Masturbation is not a sin.

Vanjones, I think it's pretty great you were able to share that experience with your church youth group buddies. If only more young Christian men had such intimate, strong, trusting relationships with fellow Christian men!

My faith teaches that all sexual activity, including masturbation, is only to be between a husband and wife. Anything done outside of marriage, including masturbation, is considered sexual sin. And whether or not it is specifically mentioned in the Bible, my religion believes in continuing revelation from God, and one of the things we've been counseled about is to avoid masturbation, pornography, pre-marital sex, and numerous other things that "the whole world" thinks are okay. God's ways are higher than man's ways, and "everybody's doing it" won't hold up at the judgment.

Masturbation is a form of indulgence in lust and detrimental to spiritual growth. Yes it's normalised in this crazy world full of of violence and lust but is a waste of life energy and an obstacle for anyone on a spiritual path.

One should stop watching porn to keep his mind out of lustful ideas and any other immoral acts. To be successful in stopping this bad habit, you need to pray and ask for spiritual assistance. You can do the following which will definitely going to help:
Keep your computer in public's eyes (living room perhaps)
Don't use your smart phone at night or where you are alone
    Keep busy spiritually
    Exercise often

Thanks
